Viswanathan Anand

Viswanathan "Vishy" Anand was born on 11 December 1969, he is an Indian Chess Grandmaster and has held the title of World Chess Champion In the past years. In 1988 Vishy Anand became the first chess grandmaster from India. He consecutively won two years in a row and held the FIDE World Chess Champion title from 2000-2002. In 2007 he was crowned as the undisputed world champion.

Vishy Anand’s Personal life

Anand was born on 11 December 1969 in the town of Chennai, a town of India, in a family of Tamil origin. Anand’s father, Krishnamurthy Viswanathan, was a retired general manager of Southern Railways and his mother Susila was a housewife.

Vishy Anand was the youngest in his family. He had an elder brother and an elder sister, his elder brother Shivakumar is working as a manager at Crompton Greaves in India and his elder sister, Anuradha, is a professor in the U.S. at the University of Michigan.

Anand got his education from Chennai and has a degree of Bachelors in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai.

Vishy Anand was married to Aruna Anand in 1996. Vishy Anand has a son named Akhil who was born on 9 April 2011.

Vishy Anand’s Chess Career

Vishy Anand took the Indian Chess world by storm in a very brilliant way. He became famous on a national level as he won the National Sub-junior Chess Championships in 1983 with a score of 9/9 at a mere age of fourteen. In 1984 he became the first Indian boy to earn the title of an International Chess Master when he won the Asian Junior Chess Championship in Coimbatore at the young age of fifteen. At the age of sixteen, Anand won the Asian Junior Chess Championship again second time consecutively in a row, held in Hong Kong, and became the National Chess Champion. In 1988 Vishy Anand was crowned as India’s First chess grandmaster after winning the Shakti Finance International Chess tournament that was held in Coimbatore. He was honored with Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, at the age of eighteen.

Vishy Anand became the undisputed World Chess Champion in 2007, he then defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008. In 2009 he defended his word Chess Championship title against Veselin Topalov, and in 2012 he defended his title against Boris Gelfand. He lost his title as the World Chess Champion in 2013 when he lost to his opponent, Magnus Carlsen. He once more tasted defeat from Carlsen in 2014 World Championship but in his recent games has held his own against the new world champion.

Vishy Anand is known as the only person alive who has won a world championship title in all forms including match, knock, and tournaments. He became the first man from Asia to win the World Chess Championship in the year 2000.

Vishy Anand has also won the Leon Magistral nine times, Corsica Masters six times and Mainz Classic eleven times which is quite amazing. His plays and victories in numerous tournaments and matches in all formats make him one on the greatest and players in the history of chess.
