 Koneru Humpy won the super category chess tournament organised for women in Russia in July. In the 10-player round robin, Humpy won three games showing efficiency with the white pieces. She was the only undefeated player. The best players from China, Georgia, Russia and the Bulgarian world women's champion Antoaneta Stefanova participated in the event that concluded on July 13.
Humpy, born March 31, 1987 is from Vijayawada and sponsored by Bank of Baroda. She is accompanied by her father and coach Koneru
Ashok. In general, Humpy, 18, fought most of her games long until the result came.
During the Ivanchuk-Ponomariov World Chess Title match at Moscow, Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia asked Indian journalist Arvind Aaron if it would be possible to organise a match between her and Humpy. There was a feeling among the women's world that Humpy's rating could be artificial. Now, her participation in this event as the top seed and also winning it silences many a critic. Importantly, her rating performance was a comfortable 2609. She will be gaining more than five Elo from this Russian event.
