Krishnan Sasikiran, the 1981-born Indian star had a push performance in the Marx Gyorgy Chess Tournament in Budapest on June 23 when he finished third in the six player double round robin event with 5.5/10.
Sasikiran of ONGC, Chennai was the second seed. He lost to top seed Emil Sutovsky (Isr) early and drew the rest in the first round robin. Towards the end he picked up steam winning against Peter Acs and Zoltan Almasi with the black pieces.
It was a category 15 event and Sasikiran would be gaining one Elo. He was expected to do better. Overall, Korchnoi had a good start and Almasi finished strongly to win the tournament at home with 6.5/10.
Final placings: 1 Zoltal Almasi (Hun) 6.5/10, 2 Viktor Korchnoi (Swz) 6, 3 Krishnan Sasikiran (Ind) 5.5, 4 Ferenc Berkes (Hun) 5, 5-6 Emil Sutovsky (Isr), Peter Acs (Hun) 3.5 each.
