D.V.Sundar, Secretary of the All India Chess Federation was felicitated by the sports fraternity of Tamil Nadu on his new assignment as the Secretary General of the Asian Chess Federation.
In a function got up at Hotel Ambassador Pallava in Chennai on June 15 by the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association, 54-year old D.V.Sundar was referred as a "multi-faceted person" by N.Srinivasan, President of the All India Chess Federation. "I got into chess because of him. He stepped in (as Secretary, AICF) when the game needed him," said Srinivasan. I think it should be easy to list the games Sundar is not involved in, joked
Srinivasan.
International Master Manuel Aaron said Sundar was a loyal friend who will never let you down. He said under Sundar and Srinivasan the AICF will have a bright future. He narrated the sequences after which Sundar became the Secretary of the AICF and later the Asian Chess Federation. He asked chess to be treated on equal terms as other sport in Tamil
Nadu.

Walter Dewaram, I.P.S. said Sundar has made Indian Bank a team to reckon in almost all games. He noted chess as a successful sport after the big achievements of Anand. "Manuel Aaron was the first Arjuna awardee from Tamil Nadu and Krishnan Sasikiran is the last. Chess has given Tamil Nadu lot of honour," he said. "I wish you all the best in your new assignment but please do not forget other sports too," the former big cop said.
Wishing Sundar well on his new assignment, Dr B.Sivanthi Adityan said, "when I asked my office to prepare the list of offices Sundar held in various sporting disciplines, I was surprised that it ran into three pages!" I am happy to say I am a good friend of him. Your becoming the Secretary General for Asia is a honour for Tamil Nadu he said while presenting a
memento on the occasion. Later, Dr Adityan promised to treat chess on par with other sports and said this will happen in the next TNOA Meeting.

Replying to the felicitations, Sundar, thanked various people in the hall and those outside for making his achievements possible in the field of sport. In the chess field, he said only after the appeals made by Dr. N.Mahalingam, the Central Government considered chess as a sport and allowed chess players gain employment in the public sector. He singled out names as G.K.Sundaram, Dr M.Gopalakrishnan, P.R.Venketrama Raja, J.C.D.Prabhakaran and others for making his organisational mark in chess. "By honouring me you have honoured chess," said D.V.Sundar who added, "Integrity is my capital." Sundar said his contact with chess was in 1975 when he started organising the Indian Bank Open Chess Tournament.
The function was attended by sportsmen from various disciplines and journalists. Chess players included WGM Aarthie Ramesh, IMs T.N.Parameswaran, N.Sudhakar Babu, T.S.Ravi, International Arbiters V.Kameswaran, K.Muralimohan, S.Paul Arokia Raj and few others. Sundar's family members also attended.
