Srinivasan, Sundar Elected Unopposed

The inglorious 16-year tenure of Mr. P.T.Ummer Koya as Secretary of the Indian Chess Federation has ended. Mr N.Srinivasan of Chennai is reelected unopposed as President of the All India Chess Federation. Mr D.V.Sundar of Chennai and Mr Bharat Singh Chauhan of Delhi have been also elected Secretary and Treasurer unopposed for the four year term 2005-2009.

The filing of nominations for the September 2005 elections was scheduled to close on September 10. On scrutiny after this date the retired Judge Mr A.K.Rajan found that seven of the state associations had not paid the membership fees for the year 2005-2006. As such they lost the right to vote and contest the elections in a order dated September 17 by the presiding officer.

The Judge tabled a list of nominees contesting the elections and this excluded the entire Koya panel who were representing the states which had not paid the membership dues. The seven states which had not paid the membership are: Kerala, Lakshwadeep, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Correspondence Chess Association of India and Chattisgarh.

Mr Koya and his friends approached the Supreme Court against this decision of the retired Judge. In a Judgment on September 23, the Supreme Court refused to interfere with the presiding officer of the election, Mr Justice A.K.Rajan and dismissed Mr Koya's petition.

Now, the elections will happen at Wallajah Hall at Hotel Connemara on Sunday September 25, 2005 and elect the office bearers.
