University of Calcutta won the All India Inter-University Tournament held at the Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu from Sep 10-15. Calcutta started as the top seeds and were in striking range of the title but never in lead except at the end of the last round.
Led by Deep Sengupta (7.5/9), the former world under-12 champion on the top board Calcutta munched all nine opponents by 2.5-1.5 at the least. Madurai Kamaraj University led the event until the last round. In the final round Madurai were held to a 2-2 draw by 16-time champions Madras. Calcutta made use of this tight result by vanquishing Visveswaraya 3.5-0.5 for the clear title. They received the Karan Singh trophy for the third time. They had previously won the championship in 2000 and 2001.
Calcutta were represented by Deep Sengupta 7.5/9, Somak Palit 7.5/9, Tanmoy Pattanayak 5.5/8, Pranjal Das 4.5/7, Soham Das 2.5/3, Soumya Bannerjee 0/0. G.Viswanathan, Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology sponsored the event offering free boarding and lodging and said he would sponsor this event once again but after a few years.
