R.Balasubramaniam of ICF, Chennai won the Adyar Times FIDE Rated Chess Tournament that was organised at the Bapalal Bhavan in Chennai from July 31 to August 5. A total of 204 players from six nations competed in the 9-round Swiss format event.

The winner, 34, had won the 2002 edition of the event but at a different venue. This time, former National `B' champion Balasubramaniam remained undefeated and tied for the first place with P.Saravana Krishnan and K.V.Ven Prakash on 7.5/9. His higher progressive score gave him the title.
In the closing ceremony, D.V.Sundar, Secretary of the AICF requested S.P.Ambrose, Managing Editor, Adyar Times to graduate his tournament from a rating tournament to an International Open where IM and GM norms will become possible.
The Rs.52,000 prize money event was organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. Importantly, nine of the 15 prize winners were school students. Both IMs P.Mithrakanth and Kudzanai Mamombe (Zim) failed to make it to the prize list.
