World Youth Chess Festival, Belfort, France - Srinath Maintains Half Point Lead

Gogineni Rohit

Narayanan Srinath (8.5/10) of Chennai moved closer to the title when he drew his tenth round with the black pieces in the World U-12 Boys Championship at Belfort, France on July 27. He needs a draw with the white pieces to win his maiden world title. India hopes to win more medals in this section with S.P.Sethuraman and V.A.V.Rajesh figuring in a seven way tie for the third place on 7.5.

Sahaj Grover (8.5/10) of Delhi scored a victory and is sharing the lead with Ivan Bukavshin at the start of the final round in the Boys 10 section. Both of them take on different opponents with the black pieces.

Y.Sandeep

Undefeated Gogineni Rohit (7.5) is in shared third place in the Boys-16 section and is capable of winning a medal. In the Boys-14 section, Y.Sandeep is tied for the fourth place with 7.5 points and could get a medal if he wins the last round. Similarly, top seed WGM Dronavalli Harika and Lakshmi Sahiti are on 7.5/10 and require a victory in the final round for a chance of a medal in the Girls-16 and 12 sections.

K.Sai Nirupama (7.5/10) lost her title chance in the Girls-10 section after she was defeated in round ten. Overall, Indians made good ground on Wednesday after a poor Tuesday. A good last round on these crucial boards and India may end up with its all-time best medal haul in the history of the World Youth Chess Festival which started in 1988.
