World Youth Chess Festival, Belfort, France - Grover & Indians Have A Poor Round Nine

K.Sai Nirupama

Narayanan Srinath of Chennai drew with the white pieces against Yifan Hou to lead the World Under-12 Boys section by half point after the ninth round at Belfort, France on July 26. Indians had a poor round nine with Sahaj Grover slipping to his first defeat in the Boys-1o section.

Overall, round nine saw 14 Indians lose, seven of them make draws and only six players won. Srinath (8/9) leads B-12 section while Sahaj Grover leads the B-10 section jointly with Ivan Bukavshin on 7.5/9. In the Girls-10 section, K.Sai Nirupama is in clear second place with 7.5/9. With two rounds still to go, these three players have title chances while the others have medal chances.

The three defeats of Y.Sandeep (6.5/9) in the Boys-14 section, I.Ramya Krishna (6/9) in the Girls-14 section and P.Lakshmi Sahiti (6.5/9) in the Girls-12 section have dented India's title prospects.

Among winners in ninth round include WGM Dronavalli Harika (6.5/9) in the Girls-16 section and S.P.Sethuraman (7/9) in the Boys-12 section. Harika has a medal chance and Sethuraman can still win the tournament if the leaders fail at the tape.
