World Under-16 Olympiad: Ukraine Wins, India Eighth

Ukraine won the World U-16 Championship that was held at Turkey from August 4-13. India finished eighth with only Dasari Sai Srinivas of Vijayawada playing better than what was expected from him.

A total of 170 players from 21 nations took part. Twenty-four teams, including two from China and Turkmenistan and three from Turkey took part.

India started well but failed to finish well losing to winner Ukraine 0.5-3.5 and runner up Georgia 1-3 in successive rounds. Overall, India won four matches, drew two and lost four. India beat South Africa 4-0, drew Sweden 2-2, beat Switzerland 3-1, lost to Hungary 1-3, drew Uzbekistan 2-2, beat Australia 3-1, lost to Ukraine 0.5-3.5, lost to Georgia 1-3, beat Singapore 4-0, lost to China-A 1.5-2.5 = 22/36.

Indian score of 22 came from (in board order): B.Adhiban 3.5/9, Sai Srinivas 5/7, M.Shyam Sundar 3.5/8, P.Saravanakrishnan 5.5/9, R.Premnath 4.5/7.

Final placings: 1 Ukraine 31/40, 2 Georgia 29, 3 China-A 26, 4 Hungary 25, 5 Azerbaijan 25, 6 Uzbekistan 25, 7 Iran 22.5, 8 India 22, 9 Kazakhstan 22, 10 Turkey-A 22, 11 Sweden 21.5, 12 China 21.5, 13 Switzerland 21...24 teams.
