India Girls Miss Podium
By Arvind Aaron
The World Women's Team Chess Championship concluded at Mardin,
Turkey on December 27. Traditional power houses, China, Russia
and Georgia completed the podium pushing India to the fourth
place.
All the three medal winning teams defeated us. China won us
closely by 2.5-1.5 while Russia and Georgia scored 3-1 against
us. India lost in the last two rounds to Georgia and China.
Tania Sachdev's 0.5/4 at the end of the competition hurt India
the most. She was our work horse and given all the nine games by
captain International Master S.C. Sahu.
It was a 5-a side, four playing one reserve 10-team 9-round
all-play-all competition. If total points and not match points
were applied, India would have picked up the silver medal. Match
points means, team winning either 2.5-1.5 or 4-0 get the same
two match points. In case of a 2-2 draw, they get 1 point. A
defeat of any magnitude gets zero points.
Indian scorers who contributed to the 23/36 were: Koneru Humpy
6/8, Dronavalli Harika 5.5/8, Tania Sachdev 4.5/9, Padmini Rout
4/6, Soumya Swaminathan 3/5. Humpy and Harika were very stable
and did not lose a single game. Humpy who played after her match
defeat excelled and played at 2654.
Final placings (match points): 1 China 16; 2 Russia 13; 3
Georgia 12; 4-5. India, Ukraine 11 each; 6-7. Armenia, Vietnam 9
each; 8 Greece 5; 9 Turkey 4; 10 South Africa 0.
