India Win Third Match, In Joint
Lead
By Arvind Aaron
Krishnan Sasikiran and Pentala
Harikrishna won on the top two boards to help India defeat
Turkey 3-1 in the fourth round of the World Team Chess
Championship being played at Bursa in Turkey on Jan 8.
India, Armenia, Israel, USA and Russia are leading with six
match points. Five rounds are still to be played. India face
Olympiad champions Armenia and top seed Russia in the next two
games.
Kivanc Haznedaroglu opted for a quiet exchange variation of the
Ruy Lopez against Sasikiran. On move 21, Sasikiran pushed a pawn
to win a bishop or knight which helped him win the game.
Sasikiran has scored two wins in a row and is India's mainstay.
Harikrishna as white opted to get a Maroczy bind against Mert
Erdogdu's king's Indian defence. In a wildly complicated game on
open board, Harikrishna dominated at every stage and emerged
with two more pawns to win the game in a rooks ending after move
42. Harikrishna's first win should give him more confidence.
Arun Prasad played the Semi-Slav defence with the black pieces
against Baris Esen. Arun Prasad drew in 45 moves with the black
pieces by holding the rook ending despite having a shattered
pawn structure.
Playing his first game in the event, national champion Adhiban
opened with the queen pawn as white and faced a Slav defence
from Burak Firat. Adhiban repeated the position and took a draw
to help India win by a 3-1 margin. Ganguly and Gopal were rested
for this round.
The results (round four): Armenia (6) bt Brazil (2) 2.5-1.5,
Greece (2) lost to Israel (6) 1.5-2.5, USA (6) bt Egypt (2) 3-1,
Azerbaijan (4) lost to Russia (6) 1.5-2.5, Turkey (0) lost to
India (6) (Kivanc Haznedaroglu lost to K. Sasikiran, Mert
Erdogdu lost to P. Harikrishna, Baris Esen drew with S. Arun
Prasad, Burak Firat drew with B. Adhiban) 1-3.
