Padmini Rout Moves Closer To The Top

Padmini Rout of Orissa moved closer to the top with a win in the penultimate round of the World Junior Girls chess championship. Padmini is half a point behind two leaders and has an outside chance of the title. Both leaders, jolted Anna Muzychuk of Slovenia and Olga Girya play white in the final round on August 16 while Padmini plays black. Padmini is sure of a medal, the last round will decide the colour of the medal.

Bhakti Kulkarni is in eighth place with 8 points. Both Padmini Rout and Bhakti are playing above their expected rating levels. Muzychuk and Girya are on 10 points and Padmini is on 9.5 points. The rest of the players are on 8.5 points.

Indians may have lost the chance to win the title but they are fighting each game in the spirit of the sport and for rating gains. Both Parimarjan Negi and S.P. Sethuraman won in the twelfth and penultimate round to reach 8 and 7.5 points.

Russian grandmasters, Dmitry Andreikin and Sanan Sjugirov are jointly leading with 9.5/12 and both are ahead of the others by one clear point. They both play black in the final round on Monday.

Having scored three wins in a row Sagar Shah is on seven points and 37th place. Others: 40 Lalith Babu 6.5; 46 Swapnil Dhopade 6.5; 58 Debashis Das 6; 60 Anwesh Upadhyaya 6; 70 Arun Karthik 6; 71 Ashwin Jayaram 6.
