India has been given what All India Chess Federation and the
chess players required. We are now a separate FIDE zone. We have
the same status like countries like Russia, USA, Canada and
China.
Indian grandmasters do not have to play zonals against untitled
opponents from Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. India had
qualified for this long back but the present regime in AICF
headed by D.V. Sundar pushed for what is necessary and have
obtained it.
During the July 1994 Anand v Kamsky Candidates match at Sanghi
Nagar, FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was asked by this
writer when will FIDE give a separate zone to India. He replied
with the Indian sports minister on his size and the AICF
officials on the other, such serious proposals should not come
from journalists but officials in the AICF.
This happened after the regime change and India has finally been
given the FIDE Zone. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov who got re-elected as
President this week is a man who acts quick and also one who
keeps his word. Chess fraternity should congratulate D.V. Sundar
for getting elected as Vice President of FIDE and also for
getting this important recognition done.
