New Delhi (20 Jan 2010) :- Third seed Iranian Grandmaster
Maghami Ehsan Ghaem with eight points back in sole lead after
defeating overnight joint leader Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev of
Uzbekistan in the ninth round of ongoing 8th Parsvnath
International Open Chess Tournament at Modern School here on
Wednesday. Playing white side of Sicilian Defence, Dzhumaev
pressed hard for a win but eventually miscalculated a sacrifice
to hand over full point to his Iranian counterpart. Other
overnight joint leader Russian International Master Nikolay
Tolstikh signed the peace treaty against Grandmaster Ziaur
Rahman of Bangladesh after 35 moves.
Young Indian International Master Deep Sengupta pulled off the
biggest upset of the day at the expense of fourth seed Russian
Grandmaster Maxim Turov after 56 moves in Caro-Kann Defence.
Sengupta along with second seed Slovenian Grandmaster Lenic Luka,
Kazakh Grandmaster Pavel Kotsur and Tolstikh are occupies the
second spot with seven and half points. Lenic and Kotsur
overcame Indian International Masters Sapatarshi Roy Chowdhury
and Lalith Babu respectively in the ninth round game. In another
surprising result, International Master Arghyadip Das held
Ukrainian Grandmaster Martyn Kravtsiv to a creditable draw.
Meanwhile, Swayams Mishra and Aniruddha Deshpande narrowly
missed a nine game International Master norm as they lost their
ninth round encounter against Grandmaster Arun Prasad and
Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Kryakvin respectively.
