New Delhi (14 Jan 2010 ) : The 8th Parsvnath International Open
Chess Tournament got off to a surprising start as Shiv Shankar
Dave of Air India held second seed Grandmaster Lenic Luka of
Slovenia in the very first round here at Modern School,
Barakhamba Road on Thursday. The other major surprise of the
round also came in the form of a draw as tenth seed Kazakh
Grandmaster Rinat Jumbayev, who was denied victory by a much
lower rated Tamilnadu lad L Barath. Apart from Lenic and
Jumbayev, almost all top seeded players of the tournament, which
include a record 21 Grand Masters, posted easy victories to
advance to the second round with full points in their kitty.
Top seed Grandmaster Le Quang Liem of Vietnam had an easy outing
against Chiraranjan Bhuyan. While third seed Gahem Maghami Ehsan
of Iran arrived at the tournament hall four hours late as his
flight got delayed due to bad weather conditions and by the time
he reached the tournament hall, his opponent young Kerala lad
Narayanan S L had already awarded the walk over point. But
Narayanan had shown great courage and sportsman spirit to play
the match against his fancied rival instead of run away with the
walk over point.
Among the Indian players, Grandmasters R R Laxman, Dibyendu
Barua and Deepan Chakkravarthy had an easy day at the office as
they beat Nirbhay Nanda, P K Jain and T Chitaranjan in the first
round encounters. The second round of this tournament, in which
378 players of 16 different countries are participating, was
still in progress at the time of latest report.
