New Delhi (15 Jan 2010 ) : In major upset, young Abhishek Das
stunned Kazakh Grandmaster Pavel Kotsur in the third round of
the 8th Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament at the
Modern School here on Friday. The foreign Grandmasters are now
feeling the heat in the Delhi’s winter as many as three of them
have tasted defeat in the third round matches. Andrey Gutov of
Russia and Niaz Murshed of Bangladesh lost their third round
encounters against Shiven Khosla and Atul Dahale respectively.
The star of the day was Jharkhand youngster Abhishek Das as he
made mockery of the rating difference of 242 points to upstage
Kotsur, rated 2568. Playing white side of Scicilian Kan
variation, Das uprooted the defence of his fancied rival in just
29 moves. Meanwhile talented Maharashtra youngster Shiven Khosla
overcame his Russian Grandmaster with black pieces in 45 moves
arrived out of Kings Indian Defence.
Top seed Grandmaster Le Quang Liem of Vietnam and veteran Indian
Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay were settled for second half point
in the tournament as they forced to split the point against
Vikramjit Singh and R K Bagdi respectively in the third round
matches. Earlier in the second round Liem was signed the peace
treaty against D Lakshman Rao while Thipsay had the same fate
against Pon N Krithika.
However, Indian Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua continued to make
merry at the expense of Shashikant Kutwal and Deepan
Chakkravarthy overcame International Master Sharad Tilak in
their third round encounters.
Continuing his fine run in the tournament West Bengal youngster
Sayantan Das held Grandmaster Martyn Kravtsiv of Ukraine to a
creditable draw. In the second round encounter he had the same
result against Bangladeshi Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman.
Before the start of the second day matches, Delhi Chess
Association facilitated GM S Sasikiran, GM S S Ganguly, GM G N
Gopal, GM Arun Prasad and IM B Adhiban members of jubilant
Indian team, which won bronze medal for the country in the just
concluded World Team Chess Championship at Turkey.
