Diptayan Ghosh, Monnisha Win Titles

Diptayan Ghosh, Monnisha Win Titles

By Arvind Aaron

Diptayan Ghosh of Kolkata and G.K. Monnisha of Chennai won the National Under-13 Chess Titles at Pondicherry on July 4. Diptayan is trained by Shankar Roy at Alekhine Chess Club and Monnisha is trained by R.B. Ramesh at Chess Gurukul.

Two players, Diptayan and Karthikeyan of Chennai remained undefeated in this event which took place at the Arumuga Kalyana Nilayam in Pondicherry. All the girls lost atleast one game.

Various players in boys and girls led during the eleven rounds making it one of the interesting contests in many years. Diptayan and Monnisha had won the National Under-9 at Bangalore in 2007 and it is strange that they are winning their second National title also together.

Monnisha was impressive winner, taking the title with a round to spare. She lost to Lasya and beat the rest and took a last round draw against Sunyasakta for the trophy. Bakshi Rutuja of Aurangabad finished second and Mahalakshmi of Chennai was third.

Rakesh Kumar Nayak was third and in the last few years Orissa chess is making giant leaps in placings and chess activity.

Girish Koushik of Mysore and Sunyasakta Satpathy of Orissa started as the top seeds but did not win. Girish came close and needed a win in the final round for the title with white. Diptayan had equalised. Girish should have tried more since if he loses he would probably still be second anyway. Defending champion Lasya played well in patches but failed in crucial games. Girish lost to National U-11 champion Aravind Chithambaram and that cost him heavily.

The event was smoothly and successfully conducted by the JCA Pondicherry MidTown on behalf of the Pondicherry State Chess Association. Udayan Ghosh of Kolkata was the chief arbiter.

Final placings (tie-break order):
