PSPB on song; Kerala beat Tamilnadu

Gurgaon (22 Feb 10) :- Pre-match favourites Petroleum Sports
Promotion Board started their campaign in style in the 30th
National Club Open Team Chess Championship here at DAV Public
School as they overcame their rivals in the first two rounds
with an identical score of 4-0 without much struggle. PSPB
rested its top ranked player Grandmaster Sasikiran for the first
two rounds before walking away with perfect scores against Delhi
and Punjab.

Meanwhile, Kerala seeded eleventh in the tournament registered
first major upset as they stunned sixth Tamilnadu in a well
fought second round match. Seasoned campaigner OT Anilkumar gave
a perfect start for Kerala in the top table as he overcame
higher rated Ramnath Bhuvanesh. While Ganesh Bhat and Fide
Master P Maheswaran split the point on second table. Venkat
Sundarm registered a decisive result in favour of Tamilnadu
against Ameer PS in the third board. But young Salil Kumar made
the day memorable for Kerala as he beat higher rated H Venkatesh
to register a 2.5-1.5 win for Kerala against its neighbours.

Second seed Air India and third seed Railway Sports Promotion
Board ‘A’ team also shown their supremacy to defeat West Bengal
and Haryana ‘A’ respectively. Earlier in the first round Air
India defeated Uttarpradesh while Railway men overcame Services
Sports Control Board.
