Anand Given A Fitting Reception

Anand Given A Fitting Reception

By Arvind Aaron

World chess champion Viswanathan Anand was given a fitting reception when he returned home to Chennai after winning the World Chess title bout at Sofia on May 11.

Anand, 40 and his wife Aruna Anand returned at 11 45 pm in the night by flight from Frankfurt on May 23.

A gathering of over 100 children, and an equal number of fans came despite the midnight arrival.

D.V. Sundar, Honorary Secretary of the All India Chess Federation, K. Muralimohan, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, the three district secretaries and other chess officials were present.

On Anand's side, his parents Viswanathan and Susheela Viswanathan were also there.

D.V.Sundar garlanded Anand and Muralimohan offered a shawl. Anand barely exchanged a few words with the media.

Last time many people could not see Anand after the 2008 match return as the crowd were plenty and CISF men advised and took away Anand in a car. This time it was close to that but a few chess people could get close to Anand. The best reception was the 2000 one when TNSCA was provided exclusive space in the airport to have the reception.

Anand appeared cheerful. When asked to pose with the trophy Anand replied "Nijamavee kondu varavillai (means: really did not bring the trophy.) I have the medal," he said.

Anand will be in India attending various felicitation ceremonies across India.
