India ranked Fifth in the World by FIDE

India ranked Fifth in the World by FIDE

By Arvind Aaron

FIDE provides plenty of statistics on its website. One of them is the average rating of top ten players of each country. India stands fifth in this list with 2641. Russia, Ukraine, China and France are ahead of us in that order.

Among women, India is sixth with 2393. Only Russia, China, Georgia, Ukraine, Hungary are ahead of us. India winning the bronze medal in the World Team Championship on maiden attempt and the Asian Gold at Doha in 2006 are signs of our big progress in the team front. AICF's thrust on organizing many rating and International tournaments, is helping us reach higher in the World Chess ladder.

On the individual front, world No.1 Magnus Carlsen gained three Elo rating points from the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee this January while World champion Viswanathan Anand lost three rating points from the same event in the March FIDE rating list.

In the net, after this small change, Carlsen, of Norway maintained his No.1 place with 2813 while Anand moved from third place to fourth place in the March FIDE rank list.

Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria remains in second place while former world champion Vladimir Kramnik moved from fourth place to third place after his second finishing at Wijk aan Zee.

There are four Indians in the World Top 100. The other three are: 44 Krishnan Sasikiran 2686, 55 S.S. Ganguly 2672 and 69 P. Harikrishna 2660.

Among women, Koneru Humpy added eight points to reach 2622, one Elo below her all-time best of 2623 recorded in July 2009. She is now exactly 60 Elo points below Judit Polgar, the No.1 ranked for over two decades.

Other Indians in the World Top 100 include: 28 D. Harika 2473, 31 S. Vijayalakshmi 2466, 72 Tania Sachdev 2373, 95 Eesha Karavade 2366. Vijayalakshmi who was inactive for over two years, added two Elo from the Chennai Open 2010 this January-February in her home town.
