Former World Under-12 Champion Deep Sengupta of Chakradharpur,
Jharkhand, presently living in Kolkata completed his third Grand
Master Norm when he did it in style by tying for first place at
Cannes in France on March 7.
Arghyadip Das scored with the white pieces over Murtas
Kazhgaleyev of Kazakhstan to finish with 6/9 and earn a Grand
Master norm. He took the eighth place and had a rating
performance of 2621.
Deep, one of the two overnight leaders after round eight (on
6.5/8), only drew Christian Bauer of France with the white
pieces in the final round to allow a three-way tie for the first
place. Deep finished third on tie-break.
Tigran Gharamian (Fra), the other overnight leader drew
Hamdouchi (Fra) to win the tournament on tie break with 7/9.
Vadim Malakhatko (Bel) finished second with 7/9 ahead of Deep
who also finished on 7/9.
Deep Sengupta had made two earlier norms at Gurgaon 2009 and the
second at Australia (Doeberl Cup) last year. Deep Sengupta
played at a rating performance of 2645.
Saravanan scored 5.5 points and finished 20th while Saptarshi
Roy took the 30th place with five points. Except Roy, all the
Indians played way above their rating levels.

all the rating tournaments should be registered 30 days in
advance. We therefore request all the organizers / State chess
associations to send their Bidform along with prescribed fee to
organize any FIDE rating events, 45 days in advance to All India
Chess Federation for onward submission to FIDE and enable us to
