Michael Adams of England won the 8th Gibtelecom Chess Festival
that took place from Jan 25 to Feb 4 at Gibraltar. Nine players
including India's Sandipan Chanda and G.N. Gopal tied for the
first place on 7.5/10.
From the tie-break, top four players were taken and a tie-break
knock out was held. Here, Adams beat Jan Gustafsson 2-1 and
former world under-18 champion Francisco Pons Vallejo of Spain
beat Chanda 1.5-0.5. In the finals, Adams beat Vallejo 1.5-0.5
to win the tournament.
The highlight of the Indian performance was Chanda playing at
2720 and Gopal playing at 2656 and Koneru Humpy playing at 2663
rating performances. Humpy tied for the tenth to 20th place with
seven points.
In the next points group from places 21-41, Dronavalli Harika
and Eesha Karavade were on 6.5 points. Other Indians 42-64 V.
Saravanan 6, 65-97 Tania Sachdev 5.5, 98-126 Kruttika Nadig 5.

associations to send their Bidform along with prescribed fee to
organize any FIDE rating events, 45 days in advance to All India
Chess Federation for onward submission to FIDE and enable us to
