STREE SEVA MANDIR
ASIAN JUNIOR & ASIAN JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
REPORT AT THE END OF ROUND 7
Shyam Sundar maintains in lead
International Master Shyam Sundar of India maintained his lead
with 6 points and WFM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam was joined by
Nakhbayeva Guliskhan of Kazakhstan on the top at the end of the
seventh round of the Stree Seva Mandir Asian Junior Asian Junior
Girls & Chess Championships. Vo Thi lost for the first time in
the championship, after six consecutive wins.Today on the first
board Shyam had to be content with half a point against Mehar
Chinnar Reddy. In a theoretical battle of the Classical
Sicilian, Shyam, playing the white pieces could not improve the
position after exchange of queens on the 16th move. Unwilling to
take risks both repeated moves to draw in 28 moves.
IM’s Srinath and Lalith Babu were engaged in a positional battle
from Caro Kan defense. Srinath was unable to open any file for
infiltration against steadfast play by Lalith, hence the draw in
59 moves. S.Nitin scored a fluent win over IM Karthikeyan, a
former Asian Junior champion. In a King’s Indian game Nitin with
black pieces had a commanding position right from the opening
and won a pawn on 31st move. Karthikeyan was running out of
ideas when Nitin’s pieces were playing all over the board in the
middle game. A late surge by Karthi with minor pieces proved
insufficient when Nitin’s center pawns threatened checkmate when
white resigned in 56 moves. With this win, Nitin moves on to 5.5
points to join Vidit Santosh Gujrati, Swayams Mishra and Mehar
Chinna Reddy on the second spot. Swayams held a tangible
advantage from the white side of the queen’s gambit against IM
Priyadarshan in 48 moves. Swayam’s outside passer combined with
rooks proved stronger. Meanwhile 2nd seeded Vidit ground Anwesh
Upadyaya in a long game of 72 moves to move into contention. In
a major upset of the day, top seed and National Champion IM
Adhiban lost to Darini Pouria of Iran after the latter displayed
an excellent endgame technique despite having a rook for a
queen. 4th seeded IM SP Sethuraman was held to a draw by K
Narayanan in 50 moves.
WFM Vo Thi Kim of Vietnam suffered a defeat at the hands of
Nakhbayeva Guliskhan of Kazakhstan today on the top board .Nakbhayeva’s
king side onslaught with pawns forced Vo Thi on the defensive.
Further a bishop sacrifice by white on the 40th move was
decisive and Vo Thi lost the game and allowed Nakbhayeva to
catch her up with 6 points. Top seed WIM Padmini Rout joined the
second spot with an attacking win over Bhakti Kulkarni from the
white side of Caro Kan defense. Former Asian medalist Preethi
score a quick win over Michelle Catherina to join Rout on the
2nd position with 5.5 points.
