ASIAN JUNIOR & ASIAN JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
REPORT AT THE END OF ROUND 3
Two
boys and four girls share the lead with three full points each
at the end of the third round of the Asian Junior & Asian Junior
Girls Chess Championships respectively. Spate of draws on the
top boards minimized the leaders in the boys section. IMs
Priyadarshan and Narayanan Srinath of India are leading the
table. In the girls section WFM Bharathi and Prathyusa of India
along with WFM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam and WFM Tay Li Jin
Jeslin of Singapore are in the lead.
Defending Champion IM Ashwin Jayaram of India who is looking for
the third consecutive title in this Championship suffered a set
back by losing to 16th seed IM Priyadarshan in 26 quick moves.
Priyadarshan playing the white side of the Moscow attack had a
considerable advantage by the 16th move itself. Ashwin blundered
a knight in the 18th move to hand over the game and point. IM
Srinath created a passed pawn on the c file against FM Akkozov
Berik of Kazakhstan, which netted him a rook for knight to win
the game in 42 moves to join at the top. On the top board IM
Adhiban from the black side of Caro Kan accepted IM Shyam Nikhil
draw offer in 34 moves. 2nd seed IM Vidit Santosh Gujrati put
pressure on the King side of FM Nitin to win an exchange on the
24th move. In a complex middle game Nitin’s c- and d- passers
were threatening for promotin but the game ended in a truce in
122 moves.
One among the leaders WFM Bharathi of India, a former Sub junior
National Champion scored a win in the Rook ending after her
opponent Mitali Madhukar Patil messed up her position. The game
ended in 89 moves. Singaporean WFM Tay Li Jin Jeslin made use of
tactical exchange to infiltrate along the b- file where her
opponent Nandhidhaa’s King was sheltering. Li’s exchange
sacrifice on the 22nd move was unacceptable for Nandhidhaa and
further weakness on the back rank forced her resignation in 37
moves. Sahajasri’ weakness around the king in the Bogo Indian
setup was well utilized by WFM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam who
notched up an important victory in 43 moves to be among the
lead. Pratyusha Bodda outplayed Harini in 30 moves from the
white side of Closed Sicilian setup.
