ASIAN JUNIOR & ASIAN JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
REPORT AT THE END OF ROUND 2
By vijayaraghavan
Thirteen
boys and eight girls share the lead with two full points at the
end of the second round of the Asian Junior & Asian Junior Girls
Chess Championships. Few upset results like Sayantan Das holding
IM Karthikeyan to draw in the boys section and Nandhidaa’s win
over 2nd seeded Bhakti Kulkarni in the girls section were
noticeable.
Sayantan Das, former U12 World Champion played a steady game to
hold IM Karthikeyan in a long game of 60 moves. Karthikeyan lost
an exchange on 14th move but had compensation in form of active
bishops. Both the players couldn’t make a headway and settled
for a draw. Nandhidhaa placed her pieces on better squares in a
Queen’s Indian game from the black side. In an attempt to
complicate Bhakti pushed her g pawn on the 24th move which was
erroneous. Nandhidhaa’s pieces infiltrated her opponent’s camp
to win a piece and the game in 32 moves .
Top seed of the Girls Section WIM Padmini Rout had to settle for
a draw against Mohanapriya after playing into a slightly
inferior middle game. Mohanapriya played a less studied
variation from the white side of the grunfeld defense .
Mohanapriya stood better when her opponent overlooked a tactical
shot losing a pawn. Padmini saved the game by entering a Queen
and opposite colour bishop ending to draw the game in 37 moves.
In the open category, seeds had a smooth sailing . IM Adhiban
outplayed IM Norm holder Arun Karthik in a Spanish game in 79
moves, defending champion Ashwin Jayaram scored a smooth win
over upcoming youngster G V Saikrishna in a Kings’ Indian game.
In a notable upset in this category, CRG Krishna scored over his
higher rated rival from Iran, Darini Pouria .
