Shirov Zooms Ahead

By Arvind Aaron

Alexei Shirov is going in a F-1 car racing ahead in the Corus Chess Tournament Grand Master Group A while the rest of the players are playing more like themselves after four rounds at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands on January 19.

Shirov, the 1972-born player is on full four points from four games. The other side of the story is that the main rivals, World Champion Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik are yet to score their first win. They are on 2/4 after playing four draws to tie for the joint fifth place.

In the second place, one point behind Shirov are Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Nakamura on three points. Nakamura drew Anand with the black pieces.

Grand Master Group B

Pentala Harikrishna defeated the top seed Arkady Naiditch in the fourth round to move to 2.5/4 after his back to back win. Ni and Anish Giri are leading with 3/4. Negi has drawn all four games in this category 16 tournament and reached two points. For those who might be interested in history, Harikrishna and Radjabov played in this Group B in 2001 and made GM Norms.

Grand Master Group C

World Junior girls champion Soumya Swaminathan lost to L. Chao and is on 0.5/4 tied for the last two places. Abhijeet Gupta is on 2.5/4. This is a 14-player category 9 tournament
