Alexei Shirov is going in a F-1 car racing ahead in the Corus
Chess Tournament Grand Master Group A while the rest of the
players are playing more like themselves after four rounds at
Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands on January 19.
Shirov, the 1972-born player is on full four points from four
games. The other side of the story is that the main rivals,
World Champion Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik are yet to
score their first win. They are on 2/4 after playing four draws
to tie for the joint fifth place.
In the second place, one point behind Shirov are Carlsen,
Ivanchuk, Nakamura on three points. Nakamura drew Anand with the
black pieces.
Grand Master Group B
Pentala Harikrishna defeated the top seed Arkady Naiditch in the
fourth round to move to 2.5/4 after his back to back win. Ni and
Anish Giri are leading with 3/4. Negi has drawn all four games
in this category 16 tournament and reached two points. For those
who might be interested in history, Harikrishna and Radjabov
played in this Group B in 2001 and made GM Norms.
Grand Master Group C
World Junior girls champion Soumya Swaminathan lost to L. Chao
and is on 0.5/4 tied for the last two places. Abhijeet Gupta is
on 2.5/4. This is a 14-player category 9 tournament
