Shirov Leads With 3/3

Alexei Shirov of Spain is leading the Corus Chess Tournament
with a full score at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands on Jan 18.
World champion Viswanathan Anand is quiet with three draws, the
last being a draw against former Cuban world junior champion
Linier Dominguez with the black pieces.
Anand is tied for the fifth place with 1.5 points from three
rounds. Ten rounds remain to be played. Carlsen who beat Smeets
in the second round, beat Van Wely, another Dutchman to be in
the joint second place along with Nakamura on 2.5.
Shirov, is a Russian born in Latvia and moved to Spain. He
played for the 2000 World Chess Title against Anand at Tehran
and lost. In 1998, he beat Kramnik in a match at Cazorla (Spain)
to qualify to play Kasparov. Kasparov yet played Kramnik and
lost his title.
Grand Master Group B
Ni joined Anish Giri in the lead on 2.5/3. Pentala Harikrishna
recovered and won his first game against Anna Muzychuk
(Slovenia) to reach 1.5/3. Negi held top seed Arkady Naiditch of
Dortmund to a draw. Negi has 1.5/3.
Grand Master Group C
Former World Junior champion Abhijeet Gupta scored his first win
over Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine to reach the second spot with
2/3.
Soumya Swaminathan lost and is tied for the bottom place with
0.5/3. R. Robson, D. Vocaturo, L. Chao are leading this Category
9 section with 2.5/3.
