Carlsen Wins Wijk aan Zee

Carlsen Wins Wijk aan Zee

By Arvind Aaron

Magnus Carlsen, 19. of Norway won the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands on January 31, 2010. He scored 8.5/13 and suffered one defeat to Vladimir Kramnik.

The second place was shared by Alexei Shirov of Spain and Kramnik of Russia on eight points. Shirov led with 5/5 and then scored 3/8 at the end.

World champion Viswanathan Anand started with plenty of draws and remained the only undefeated player. After scoring two wins over Shirov and Kramnik he moved up in the end. He remained undefeated on 7.5 and took the fourth place. Clearly, Anand is preparing for the Sofia match and not for opponents in this event.

Giri Wins Group B

Anish Giri of the Netherlands won the Grand Master Group B (Category 16) with 9/13 after losing one game to Anna Muzychuk. He will make a maiden entry into the Group A next year. P. Harikrishna and P. Negi scored 6.5/13 and tied for the sixth-seventh places.

Chao Wins Group C

L. Chao won the Grand Master Group C (Category 9) with 10/13. Abhijeet Gupta finished second with 8.5 points. World junior girls champion Soumya Swaminathan tied for the bottom place with Plukkel on three points.
