Sethuraman Impressive In Pardubice - Vidit Misses Grandmaster Norm

By Arvind Aaron

International Master S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai finished third in the Czech Open that concluded at Pardubice on August 1.

Sethuraman performed well in his second straight event. Sethuraman is sponsored by Indian Oil. He recorded a whopping high rating performance of 2649 but still could not get the GM norm as he did not face the required three Grand Masters.

Sethuraman held the top seed and champion Grand Master Anton Korobov of Ukraine to a draw. He won six games, drew against Vaibhav Suri of Delhi in the nine round Swiss for 310 players. He lost one game.

Posting a rating of 2513 in the July 2010 list, Sethuraman has done well in back-to-back events and has gained 14.8 Elo from this competition alone. National Junior champion Sethuraman travels to Poland next to play in the World Junior from August 3, 2010.

World Under-16 runner up Vidit Gujrathi of Nasik required a final round draw for a Grand Master norm but lost to Sergey Grigoriants of Russia to finish on six points. He gains 7.5 Elo from this event.

M.R. Lalith Babu scored 6.5 after losing a game early. He had a rating performance of 2551. A GM result normally ensures a 2600 rating performance along with meeting three Grand Masters. Lalith Babu met two Grand Masters. Lalith Babu is gaining 6.5 Elo.
