Bharathi, Saranya Among Leaders

Thirteen players, including the
second seed R. Bharathi and third seed J. Saranya, both from
Chennai are leading with full two points in the National Women's
Challengers Chess Championship which is taking place at Guwahati
in Assam on Aug 21.
Bharathi won a bishop via a pin to defeat two-time World Under-8
champion Ivana Furtado. Saranya overcame the experienced Anjali
Sagar in the ending after a balanced middlegame. Anjali Sagar's
daughter, Tejaswini Sagar is among the leaders on full two
points.
In the earlier round, favourite Woman International Master
Bhagyashree Thipsay of Mumbai slid into a weak position but drew
Maharashtra team-mate Vaishnavi Akhade in 37 moves. Bhagyashree
is on 1.5 points after two rounds and is tied for the 14th
place.
Nine rounds remain to be played in this Rs.1,25,000 prize money
84-player event. Debashis Barua of Kolkata is the chief arbiter.
The top 20 will advance to play in the National Women's Premier
Chess Championship to be held at Orissa from October 16-25.
