World champion Viswanathan Anand drew his penultimate match game
with white to go into the twelfth and final game having to play
with the black pieces. The score is level at 5.5-5.5 at Sofia.
The champion, Anand, would have loved to finish the match early
but now has to go through this nervous final game. A win for
either player in game 12 will give them the title.
Anand, 40, had been in this stage before in 1998 when he was a
game down and won a must win encounter at Lausanne. That was the
only world title match to be decided in rapid play.
There is a big possibility that this will go into the tie-breaks
as well. The final game will be played on May 11. If it is a
draw, the rapid tie-breaks will be played on May 13.
Having opened with the queen pawn in all previous five games,
Anand chose not to open with the queen pawn and went for the
English opening.
Anand kept a small edge all through and drew in an ending after
65 moves. It was a nail-biting encounter. Almost all games of
this match were fought down to the point of result.
The opening looked like a Sicilian dragon reverse. Anansd and
Topalov played a risky game but no player missed any major
winning chances. So, winner takes all in game 12.
