India Seeks Hat-Trick In Olympiad

By Arvind Aaron

The Indian Youth Chess Olympiad team which underwent a training camp at Chennai until September 24, received a pep talk from Grand Masters Sundararajan Kidambi, Rajaram Laxman and Magesh Chandran and International Master M.R. Venkatesh before leaving for Turkey.

The team coached by FM. K.Visweswaran will be looking for a hat-trick of wins in the World Youth Chess Olympiad commencing at Turkey. They had won the title in Singapore 2007 and Turkey in 2008. The coaching co-ordinator K. Visweswaran said the boys are bright and cheerful and should repeat what we did in the two preceding years. International Master P.D. S. Girinath will be accompanying the team as the coach

The five member Indian for the first time comprises of players from different cities. K. Priyadharshan (Madurai), Debashis Das (Cuttack), Aditya Udeshi (Mumbai), Girish Koushik (Mysore) and Prathamesh Reddy (Hyderabad). In a luncheon arranged by D.V. Sundar, Honorary Secretary of the AICF, Chennai's leading lights wished the five players the best of luck besides giving them insights that could help the team win again.

Magesh Chandran asked them to focus on each game and not think about the result and bring pressure on themself. Kidambi said the players can voice their opinion to the coach but accept every decision of the coach and be prepared to play with any colour on any day or take rest on any day in the interest of the team. India's latest grand master Laxman told them how to handle draw offers.

Later, all the five players agreed in unison that the training camp was useful in learning many combinations, endings and also in brushing up their opening repertoires. These camps are one of the main reasons for enhanced performances by Indians in recent times, observed Sundararajan Kidambi.
