Yinzhou Cup 2nd World Women Team Chess
Championship-2009
Ningbo-China from 1st September to 12th
September 2009
Final Report
Eesha Karvade wins Silver Medal on the 3rd Board
By Lanka Ravi
China won the second World Women Team Chess Championship
held at Ningbo, China from 1st September to 11th
September 2009. India beat America in the final round
with a very convincing margin 3-1. But it was the last
round of the tournament! The great Chinese saying goes
as : “War does not determine who is right but it
determines what is left!” in the same way I feel the
World Women Chess Matches that concluded gave us 7th
position. However, if we look at postmortem, an extra
draw against Armenia ( We drew 2-2) and Win against
Ukraine ( We drew top three and Mary lost in a plus
position) our team could have been returning with the
coveted Silver Medal. Incidentally, before September
FIDE ratings were released, Indian Team was seeded 7th
only. But due to Mary’s excellent run in the National B
we moved up 2 slots and ranked 5th in Ratings.
Our girl Eesha Karvade has played one of the best chess
tournaments in her career. She has not only played all
the 9 games in a row without any break but also won the
Silver Medal on Board 3. But for a slight performance
rating calculations, she might as well would have won
Gold Medal!
The Chinese Chess Association authorities had expressed
great happiness that we came to participate in the
tournament. The Head of Chinese Chess Association Mr.Chi
Bu, The General Secretary & Grand Master Ye Jiang Zuan
and Tournament Organiser,Tian Hongwei have expressed
desire to build more chess relationships with India in
Chess and also wanted a unique chess match with Chinese,
Indians and Vietnam players playing with an European
Team. This matter has been expressed during the dinner
of the Prize Distribution ceremony. On my part I
expressed our sincere thanks for the hospitality
extended and told them that I would convey the message
to You. ( Photo is included)
