Top seed Russia is moving ahead of defending champion
India in the World Youth Chess Olympiad. After
round eight, India and Russia were tied at 22.5 points
but round nine proved decisive for the favourites as
they hammered a Turkish team 3.5-0.5 while India managed
only 1.5-2.5 against Armenia.
October has turned the fortunes away from Indians. In
the morning session we managed a 2.5-1.5 win over
fourth seed Hungary while in the evening we lost 1.5-2.5
to Armenia. Indians are on 24 points after nine rounds
in second place. Russia are in the saddle on 26 points.
One more round to be played.
In the game against Hungary, Girish Koushik of Mysore
did the star turn for Indians as he won on the
bottom board. Only Girish was lower than his opponent in
the entire match. The three Indians who had higher
rating than their opponents, Priyadarshan, Debashis and
Udeshi made draws.
The placings after round nine: 1 Russia 26. 2 India 24,
3 Armenia 23, 4 Georgia 22.5, 5-6. Hungary, Turkey-T
21.5 each...22 teams.

all the rating tournaments should be registered 30 days in
advance. We therefore request all the organizers / State chess
associations to send their Bidform along with prescribed fee to
organize any FIDE rating events, 45 days in advance to All India
Chess Federation for onward submission to FIDE and enable us to
