India Starts Bang Bang In Turkey
By Arvind Aaron
Two-time champions India who are seeking a hat-trick in
the World Youth Chess Olympiad at Turkey.
In the opening round, second seeded India blanked Sri
Lanka 4-0 and in the second we have defeated ninth seed
England also by 4-0. With this new power in our Under-16
Sub-Junior teams, our teaching and selection methods are
now going to be copied by other nations. Already for
many years our Youth Teams are dominating the show.
In the 22-team competition, second seed India and fifth
seed Georgia are leading with full eight points. They
face each other in the third round later on September
26. It is a nine round Swiss and the maximum possible
points is 36. Four players from one nation face four
players from another in each match. Top seed Russia is
behind on 5.5 points after a 3.5-0.5 win and a 2-2 draw
with Azerbaijan.
India had won the title in Singapore in 2007 and in
Turkey in 2008 and there is plenty of hope for a
hat-trick.
In the opening round, India rested Debashis Das on board
two and fielded the rest of the players to win 4-0. K.
Priyadharshan, Aditya Udeshi, Girish Koushik and
Preethamsh Reddy won. AICF's coaching co-ordinator K.
Visweswaran of Chennai has travelled with the team at
the last minute following sickness of International
Master P.D.S. Girinath.
In the second round, we overcame England by the same 4-0
margin. Aditya Udeshi, our National Sub-Junior champion
from Mumbai was rested. Priyadharshan, Debashis Das,
Girisk Koushik and Deepthamsh Reddy scored wins over
lower rated British opponents on all four tables.
India's test comes in the third round when we face
Georgia
