Seven Indians, including the local
heroes Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Sandipan Chanda figure
among the list of fifteen leaders with a score of 2/2 in
the Kolkata Open today. Others are P. Magesh Chandran of
Tamil Nadu, Abhijeet Gupta and Abijit Kunte of PSPB,
Himanshu Sharma of Haryana and Vidit Santhosh Gujrati of
Maharashtra. Apart from the leaders, Sriram Jha of LIC,
continued his fine form from where he left in the Asian
Zonals and Malaysian Open to record his first draw
against a player rated above 2700. The opponent was none
other than the top seed and twice world junior champion
Mamadyarov Shakhriyar of Azerbaijan. Though Mamadyarov
had connected pawns at the centre in the rook and pawn
ending, he could not carve out a win due to the nice
play by Jha.
Vidit upset the apple cart of the highly rated GM G.N.
Gopal of PSPB in a 50 move battle. Gopal under estimated
the potentials of Vidit and lost a valuable pawn on the
31st move on the a- file. The a- and b- pawns of Vidit
played havoc and Gopal had to resign when one of the
pawns was about to be queened.
Three more Indians utilized the opportunity to subdue
their grandmaster opponents today. In the battle between
Himanshu and the Czeck GM Viktor Laznicka, Viktor was
not the victor. In the rook and pawn ending, Himanshu
gained the point due to his extra pawn. Sahaj Grover of
Delhi defeated Reefat bin Sattar, the GM from Bangladesh
and Tiwari Arjun of Maharashtra overpowered GM Neelotpal
Das of PSPB. Third seeded Ni Hua of China had to be
content with another draw, this time against
Vikramaditya Kamble of Railways. World junior champion
B. Adhiban of Tamil Nadu missed a win overlooking a
three fold repetition draw claim by Aleksej Aleksandrov,
winner of the Abu Dhabi Chess festival recently. Former
national champion P. Konguvel, Deep Sengupta of PSPB,
Saptashi Roy Chodhury of Railways, Swapnil S Dhopade and
Akash Thakur of Maharashtra and M. Shyam Sundar of Tamil
Nadu had respectable draw games against their formidable
foreign GM opponents.
