Norms Galore at Kolkata Open

Norms Galore at Kolkata Open

By Prof. Rathinam Ananthram

In addition to the three norms achieved on 8th September, seven more players secured title norms, two of them GM and remaining IM norms. R.R. Laxman of Tamil Nadu completed the formalities for his GM title with this norm and Sahaj Grover , the youngster from Delhi earned his maiden GM norm. Three Maharashtra players Vidit Gujrati, Ankit R Rajpara and Shiven Khosla, P. Shyam Nikil of Tamil Nadu and Abhishekh Das of Jharkhand had a memorable day for getting the norms. More norms maybe expected on the final day.

Liem Le Quang, an unassuming soft spoken GM from Vietnam again shot into sole lead with 7.5 points by outwitting the Uzbekistan GM Anton Filippov. Closely following him on the heels with 7 points is the defending champion Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic. Calcutta hopes, Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Sandiapn Chanda got into reckoning again by their steady wins to put themselves in the third place, along with the top seed Mamedyarov Shakhriyar of Azerbaijan and Anton FIlippov, with 6.5 points each. Ganguly and Sandipan are placed third and fourth in the rank list before the start of the final round and title for them can not be ruled out. While Liem faces Satyapragyan of Orissa, Sandipan and Ganguly clash the sword with each other and Shakhriyar meets Laznicka in the crucial final round.

The exciting game of the day was the one between the Tamil Nadu GM Sundarrajan Kidambi and the GM norm aspirant Vidit, who needed a full point for his norm. Large crowd gathered around the board, eagerly awaiting Vidit’s win, as he was in a very good position. But, he miscalculated the prowess of Kidambi and the game petered out into a draw, each having one minor piece at the end. B. Adhiban, the world under 16 champion from Tamil Nadu required half a point to get his GM norm. Sandipan played a cool game and thwarted Adhiban’s attempts, to pocket the point in 41 moves. Anyhow, Adhiban and Vidit still have the norm chances subject to their win tomorrow. Sayantan Das could not continue his good run and he had to be content with the IM norm only, as he lost to the experienced Swedish GM Tiger Hillarp Persson. Tiger pounced on Sayantan, dear to all, resembling a deer prey to a tiger. Himanshu Sharma kept his norm chances alive by beating Ram S Krishnan of Tamil Nadu and he needs a full point in the final round for his GM norm.
