Le upsets Ganguly to take sole lead
By Prof. Rathinam
Ananthram
Le Quang Liem of Vietnam shocked the local favourite and
six times national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly to
lead the table with 6 points, at the end of the seventh
round of the 4th Kolkata Open GM tournament, organized
by Alekhine Chess Club, Kolkata today. Overnight joint
leaders Sandiapn Chanda, another GM from Kolkata,
defending champion Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic and
Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan, who inflicted the first
defeat on the England numero uno Nigel Short are adrift
of half a point from Le. A score of twelve players,
three Indian IMs – B. Adhiban and R.R. Laxman of Tamil
Nadu and Satyapragyan of Orissa and remaining all GMs
are on the third spot with 5 points apiece. Interesting
tussles are on the card in the three remaining rounds.
In the Caro Kann defence employed by Le, Ganguly traded
the queens on the 12th move itself. A few weak moves by
Ganguly forced him to lose a couple of pawns and later
the game to Le. On the top board, though Viktor had an
extra pawn against Sandipan in the Slav defence,
Sandipan staved off the challenge to force a draw in 60
moves. In the Evans gambit, Anton Filippov made short
work of Nigel Short, grabbing two pawns quickly. Short
resigned, when he was about to be checkmated.
The birth day boy Sahaj Grover of Delhi ensured that it
was a good day for him by securing half a point from G.N.
Gopal of PSPB, rated 310 points above him. The marathon
game lasted 120 moves in which Sahaj had a rook and two
points against a bishop, knight and two pawns of Gopal.
Sahaj slated to play Ganguly in the next round, has
already met 7 GMs in seven rounds. With an amazing
average rating of 2572, he has already achieved IM norm
and needs half a point for the GM norm in two rounds,
subject to the maintenance of the average rating.
Adhiban and the Delhi GM Parimarjan Negi played a
fighting draw in 53 moves. Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, the
top seed from Azerbaijan is slowly shifting to top gear
and today he defeated the in form P.Magesh Chandran of
Tamil Nadu. Both Bangaldesh GMs Enamul Hossain and Ziaur
Rehman were on the losing side for the second successive
day. While Enamul lost to the Israel GM Evgeny Postny,
R.R. Laxman of ICF easily defeated Ziaur. GM Deepan
Chakkravarthy of PSPB fell a victim to IM Satyapragyan
of Indian Airlines. R. Premnath of Tamil Nadu accounted
for Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan, the second GM in as
many rounds. Starting with a hat trick of losses,
Premnath has scored four straight wins.
