Laznicka Viktor of Czech Republic and Le Quang
Liem of Vietnam have joined the overnight leader
Sandipan Chanda at the top, with 5 points each at the
end of the sixth round of the 4th Kolkata Open GM
tournament, organized by Alekhine Chess Club at Gorky
Sadan, Kolkata today. Four Indians, national champion
Surya Shekhar Ganguly of West Bengal, P. Magesh Chandran
and B. Adhiban of Tamil Nadu and Parimarjan Negi of
Delhi, along with four other foreign grandmasters,
including second seeded Nigel Short of England are on
the second spot with 4.5 points each. Twice world junior
champion Mamedyarov Shakhrair of Azerbaijan bounced back
with a fluent win over Swapnil Dhopade of Maharashtra
and is at a striking distance with 4 points.
Sandipan did not take much risk in his game against
Nigel to settle for a draw in 29 moves. In the game
against Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh, Viktor Laznicka,
sacrificed his knight on 28th move to control the g-
file with his double rooks. After exchanging his two
rooks for the queen, Viktor got back a minor piece a
couple of moves later. Ziaur had to forego his rook for
the bishop in a vain attempt to save the game but the
aggressive queen moves by Viktor earned him a point in
54 moves. Another Bangladesh GM Enamul Hossain was also
on the losing side against Le in the Classical variation
of Kings Indian defence. After exchanging the queens on
23rd move, Le gained an upper hand and preferred to
march the pawn to seventh rank instead of protecting his
knight. Enamul resigned immediately. Former national
champion Abijit Kunte lost two crucial pawns
unnecessarily between 33rd and 37th moves against
current the champion Ganguly. The rest was routine for
Ganguly to post a win.
Other notable games were the Sahaj Grover’s upset win
over Guseinov Gadir of Azerbaijan, Premanth’s fluent win
over Bangladesh GM Reefat bin Sattar, P. Shyam Nikil’s
draw against Kerala GM G.N. Gopal and S.P. Sethuraman’s
draw with the controversial Vladislav Tkachiev of
France. Shivananda of Karnataka signed the peace treaty
with Tiger Hillarp Persson of Sweden, Maharashtra’s
Prathamesh Mokhal drew with Anuar Ismagambetov of
Kazakhstan and another Maharashtra player Ankit R
Rajpara grabbed half a point from Neelotpal Das, the GM
from the host state
