Five leaders

FIVE leaders

By Prof. Rathinam Ananthram

Five players Sandipan Chanda of West Bengal, P. Magesh Chandran of Tamil Nadu, Nigel Short of England, Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh and Safarli Eltaj of Azerbaijan share the lead with 3 points each at the end of the third round of the 4th Kolkata Open GM tournament, organized by Alekhine Chess Club, here, today. Twelve other players are trailing behind by half a point.

To avoid a checkmate, Khusnutdinov Rustam of Kazakhstan had to forego his queen for a rook and bishop against Sandipan Chanda, the local celebrity. Rustam gave up the fight after 38th move, when Chanda had a queen and knight against his two rooks. In an interesting game, Magesh, playing black gained two minor pieces, when his opponent Mamedov Rauf of Azerbaijan was forced to give them up in compensation for two advancing pawns. In the resulting two knights Vs pawn ending, Mamedov tried in vain to achieve a draw. But, Magesh forced Mamedov’s king to the corner and brought his two knights in tandem for a checkmate threat. Mamedov resigned after 85 moves.

Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia made a hasty 37th Ng7 move in a Caro Kann defence against three times Commonwealth champion Nigel Short of England. It enabled Short to post a win on the 40th move, threatening with a rook check with a bishop support, leading to a checkmate. In a Ruy Lopez game between Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh and Abhijeet Gupta of PSPB, the latter had to give up his bishop for a seventh rank pawn of Enamul on the 40th move. Abhijeet resigned four moves later.

Himanshu Sharma of Haryana was checkmated by Safarli Eltaj of Azerbaijan in just 26 moves, who combined his queen and knight beautifully. The Asian chess champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly had a formal 20 move draw with the Bangladesh GM Ziaur Rahman in a queen pawn game.

The top seed Mamedyarov Shakhriyar of Azerbaijan overcame indisposition and Vidit Santosh Gujrati to pocket a point in 26 moves. Vikramaditya Kamble of Railways performed creditably to get a draw against third grand master in a row. The hat trick of draws is all against super GMs Negi, Ni Hua and finally G.N. Gopal.
