World Junior Chess Championship  - 2009

World Junior Chess Championship 2009 - Padmini leads

Report by IWM Mrunalini and GM Magesh

WIM Padmini defeated second seed WIM Zhang Xiaowen of china in a fine game to take the sole lead at the end of 6th round. Padmini opted for the classical system against Zhang’s French defense. Padmini defended well early only to launch her own attack later in the middle game. She sacrificed a pawn and forced the issue on her Chinese counter part.

WIM Kiran manisha, showed excellent endgame skills to snatch a full point against Fernandez Maria of Argentina. WGM Soumya Swaminathan outplayed WIM Ivakhinova  from Russia. Soumya went up an exchange in the middlgame and converted her advantage into a whole point.

Top seed WGM Mary Ann Gomes suffered another shocking defeat at the hands of WFM Amed Stephanie of Argentina after blundering a piece early in the game. Harini blundered in the opening and went down against WFM Herrera of Columbia.

In the boys/open section top seed GM Vachier-Lagrave Maxime of France is jointly leading with GM Zhigalko Sergei of Belarus. Lalith Babu with 4 points continued to show promise after defeating his team mate Shyam Sundar from an apparently equal position. Shyam missed a few opportunities to push for a win for himself and in the end made a fatal error in a queen and pawn endgame. The other 3 pointer Karthikeyan lost against IM IBARRA CHAMI Luis F from Mexico in a difficult game. Karthikeyan’s minor calculation glitch cost him dearly as he had to suffer a very passive position through out the game. Vishnu Prasanna and Ashwiin Jeyaram outclassed their lower rated opponents without much of a problem.
