World Junior Chess Championship  - 2009

World Junior Chess Championship 2009
Padmini Jumps to second spot

Report by IWM Mrunalini and GM Magesh

WIM Padmini Rout scored a victory over WIM Kalinina Ogla of Ukrain to jump to the second spot. WIM Zhang Xiaowen of China has taken sole lead at the end of 5th round at World Jr Chess Championship (girls) 2009, being held at Puerto Mydren, Argentina. Padmini Shares the second spot with WIM cori Tello Deysi. Today Padmini will play on the top board with WIM Zhang.

WGM Soumya playing with white pieces missed a winning chance in the opening, after a long fight, game ended in a draw. WIM Kiran and WGM Mary scored easy wins. Harini lost to Hayraptan.   In the boys section Lalith Babu suffered his first defeat in the hands of the Chinese GM Li Chao. Lalith had a good position out of the Anti Grunfeld opening, but blundered in time trouble to hand over the full point to his opponent. P Karthikeyan gave a run for the young and the latest GM Ray Robson for his money. Karthikeyan took the upper hand right from the beginning in the Catalan opening. Eventually he went on to win a pawn in the endgame, but could not convert his advantage and both the players decided to split the point. Ashwin Jeyaram, Shyam Sundar and Adibhan had a smooth sail against their lower rated rivals.

Vishnu Prasanna played a fine game agains the polish GM Swiercz Dariusz. Vishnu got a clear advantage from the word go and kept pusing for a win. He sacrificed an exchange in the endgame and still held a comfortable position. Eventually as both the players neared end of the time control, errors began to pour in and Vishnu eventually paid a price for overstretching his position.
