The parents of India's latest grandmaster R.R. Laxman of
Chennai took a cue from the parents of Adhiban but had a
small party for a handpicked elite gathering at Adyar in
south Chennai on October 9.
"Set new, bigger, higher goals," adviced International
Master Manuel Aaron while congratulating Laxman on
becoming a Grand Master. India's first International
Arbiter V. Kameswaran and FIDE Master K.V. Shantharam
were present. "Keep playing and do not take any
breaks," said D.V. Sundar, Honorary Secretary of the
AICF as his advice for the big made Grand Master.
Playing at a stretch is your strength and make it count
the most in first prizes, said Sundar in a humourous
manner.
People have started to ask me why I am not playing after
becoming a grandmaster, said Laxman. Laxman said he will
be playing in the Asian Indoor Games later this month
which will mainly be rapid chess and blitz. I hope to
play in the National 'A' after the Grand Master
certificate reaches me, said Laxman.
Laxman's father, Dr Rajaram who is 6 feet five inches
tall and has been a former basketball player was the
host. His mother, also a medical doctor and someone who
travelled with Laxman all these years was also present.
On the menu for the celebration was a choice of
ayurvedic vegetarian food and it was a buffet on Indira
Nagar First Main Road. One of the items was "drumstick
biriyani". Eating here means staying healthy, said
Laxman
