Tata Steel Asian Team Chess Championship 2009 - India and Indonesia lead

By Grandmaster D.Barua

India A and Indonesia have won both matches so far to lead the table with 4 match points each at the end of the second round of the Tata Steel Asian team Chess Championship, organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at the Town Hall, Kolkata. On the distaff side, India A and Vietnam have collected the full match points (4) from two rounds. For each win, a team gets two match points and a draw will fetch one match point. Each match is played over four boards.

India A team made short work of India B team by a score of 3.5 – 0.5. On the top board, national champion B. Adhiban of the B team, settled for a draw in 30 moves with P. Harikrishna, the highest rated player in the tournament. While Sasikiran and S.S. Ganguly of the A team did not strain much to beat their counterparts Sathyapragyan and R.R. Laxman respectively, Negi was stretched by Deep Sengupta of the B team, before Negi could win.

Second seeded Vietnam was held to a draw by third seeded Iran in a tough encounter. Ghaem Maghami Eshan outplayed the Kolkata Open winner Le Quang Liem and Nguuyen Ngoc Truong Son did a favour to Vietnam by winning against Moradiabadi Elshan. The other two games were drawn.

Harika and Tania Sachdev defeated their Iran opponents Atousa Pourkashiyan and Ghader Pour to put India ahead. Eesha Karavadw and world junior champion Soumya Swaminathan drew their games to make the score 3-1. The Vietnamese women team shocked the second seeded India B 3-1, the only consolation win coming from the local girl Mary Ann Gomes. Nisha Mohota, Padmini Rout and Bhakti Kulkarni lost to either lower or equally rated opponents.
