India maintain lead in the Asian Team Championship, Vietnam move ahead in the Women's section
By Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua

Crucial wins on middle boards against all GM Vietnam team helped top seeds India "A" maintain their lead after four rounds in the Tata Steel Asian Team Chess Championship at Town Hall, Kolkata here today. India "A" lead with 8 match points followed by Iran and Vietnam at 7 and 5 match points respectively. In the crucial fifth round match, top seeds India "A" now takes on darkhorses Iran team tomorrow.

Grandmaster S S Ganguly gave India "A" a flying start scoring a fine Grunfeld win over Vietnam veteran GM Dao Thien Hai. Ganguly finished his game in style and snatched the full point in less than two hours. Next to finish was the bottom board drawn game between GMs Parimarjan Negi and Nguyen Anh Dung.

Coming up with a Captain's show was experienced Indian Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran who scored over GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, where the Indian had to grind out the victory after five hours of play. Harikrishna was the last to lose going down to the hardworking Kolkata Open Champ Le Quan Liem. The final score of 2.5-1.5 hardly reflects the efforts the hosts took to get the better of their Vietnam counterparts, which nevertheless was sufficient to keep their lead.

In the women's section, India "A" suffered a shock 1.5-2.5 against India "B" with top three game ending without result and WGM Kruttika Nadig going down to WFM Bhakti Kulkarni in the bottom board. National Champion Dronavalli Harika's efforts to eke out a win in the knight and pawn ending against WGM Mary Ann Gomes failed as both settled for a draw after the first time control. Vietnam increased their lead with 7 match points, two points clear of India "A", India "B" and Singapore.
