World Youth Chess Championship at Antalya, Turkey
November 12 - 23 2009
Three Medal Winners Arrive At Chennai
By Arvind Aaron
The chess fraternity in Chennai welcomed the three
Chennai players who won medals at the World Youth Chess
Festival that concluded at couple of days before at
Antalya in Turkey.
S.P. Sethuraman, the under-16 champion, J. Saranya, the
bronze medal in under-14 girls and Karthikeyan Murali,
under-10 silver medal winner were given a nice reception
by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and the
Velammal School. All the three of them belong to the
Velammal School.
On arrival, the coach, GM R.B. Ramesh said we could have
won three more titles or medals had Vaibhav Suri, B.
Adhiban and Bansi Prathima won in the final round.
Chennai keeps the World Under-16 title as B. Adhiban had
won this section in 2008 at Vietnam. S.P. Sethuraman had
replaced him as champion and this title remains in our
country.
Many of our players were in the next higher age group
section this time and more medals could come next year,
observed Ramesh.
International Master K. Murugan of Neyveli also arrived
with the team. Along with WGM Aarthie Ramesh, IM D.V.
Prasad and IM norm holder K. Visweswaran this was
perhaps the best coaching unit which travelled for these
events from India.
One happy person was M. Velayudham of Bloom Chess
Academy, the man with a cap even in indoors. Two of his
students, J. Saranya and Karthikeyan Murali won medals.
Besides parents of the champions and other players from
the state the reception party was above 100. Many
players arrived from Mumbai while a few others arrived
from Delhi all at around 1 p.m. and the reception
was a happy one with distribution of sweets and players
being garlanded.
