Sethuraman's Celebration
By Arvind Aaron
International Master S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai who won
the World Under-16 title at Antalya, Turkey this week,
celebrated the success with chess friends of his family
here at the heart of Chennai's Information Technology
Corridor Food Court at Ascendas in Taramani on Nov 26.
The Sethuraman party was hosted by his father S.
Panayappan. S. Panayappan is a well known chess trainer
who runs the Kilpauk Chess Centre. Among those who
attended were D.V. Sundar, Honorary Secretary, AICF,
Manuel Aaron, Government Observer for Chess, V.
Kameswaran, India's first International Arbiter and
others.
The coaches who travelled together with the Indian team,
GM R.B. Ramesh, his wife and WGM Aarthie Ramaswamy,
IM Norm holder and AICF's Coaching Co-Ordinator K.
Visweswaran were also present.
"Sethuraman is a humble and simple boy with a cool head
and he is sure to become a grandmaster soon," said
D.V.Sundar. Sethuraman needs to get more publicity for
this success and his school needs to take the
initiative, Manuel Aaron told Panayappan.
Sethuraman's best game at Antalya was against
Nyzhnkillya of Ukraine. His defeat to Vidit Gujrathi of
Nasik came after this twelfth standard student of
Velammal failed to hear his opponent's draw offer!
Sethuraman and his brother S.P. Murugappan (who
celebrated his birthday on Nov 26) had plenty of French
fries and Chicken. "I had plenty of fish and chicken at
Sailors Beach in Antalya," said Sethuraman.
In addition to chess, he does yoga, meditation and also
has a mini-gym at home. Panayappan says, the entire
family are chessplayers. Sethuraman's mother is also a
chess player having scored 4.5 points in the SPIC Tournament in Tuticorin. Sethuraman said his
younger brother also plays chess in Tamil Nadu and is
presently stronger than his father.
Busy talking to the print and media on arrival,
Sethuraman did not have time to attend school and would
be packing his bags for the National 'A' at Mumbai
on Nov 29. Sethuraman has a long way to go in the chess
career and when he is finished, he would have had many
more parties as today.
