A final round defeat to nemesis Levon Aronian of
Armenia cost world champion Viswanathan Anand a place at
the top in the Tal Memorial that concluded at Moscow on
Nov 14.
Vladimir Kramnik, former world champion, of Russia drew
the final round against Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine to
win the tournament with six points from nine rounds and
win the title.
Magnus Carlsen or Norway recovered in the end to share
the second place with Ivanchuk after he won against
Peter Leko of Hungary. They scored 5.5 points. The
top three remained undefeated.
Anand who had a good tournament required a win in the
final round to share the top place. He opened with the
queen pawn and ran into opening problems facing the Slav
defence of Aronian.
Anand could not castle and lost pawns to give life to
his rooks but lost in 25 moves with white.
Overall, he ended on plus one despite spoiling his
tournament in the last round. Starting with a 2788
rating,
Anand played at 2804. Kramnik gains the most rating from
this contest. The World Blitz Championship starts at the
same venue.
The results (round nine): Ivanchuk drew with Kramnik,
Anand lost to Aronian, Ponomariov bt Morozevich, Svidler
drew with Gelfand, Leko lost to Carlsen.
