Moscow Chess Tournament

Kramnik takes first place

BY Arvind Aaron

A final round defeat to nemesis Levon Aronian of Armenia cost world champion Viswanathan Anand a place at the top in the Tal Memorial that concluded at Moscow on Nov 14.

Vladimir Kramnik, former world champion, of Russia drew the final round against Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine to win the tournament with six points from nine rounds and win the title.

Magnus Carlsen or Norway recovered in the end to share the second place with Ivanchuk after he won against Peter  Leko of Hungary. They scored 5.5 points. The top three remained undefeated.

Anand who had a good tournament required a win in the final round to share the top place. He opened with the queen pawn and ran into opening problems facing the Slav defence of Aronian.

Anand could not castle and lost pawns to give life to his rooks but lost in 25 moves with white.

Overall, he ended on plus one despite spoiling his tournament in the last round. Starting with a 2788 rating,
Anand played at 2804. Kramnik gains the most rating from this contest. The World Blitz Championship starts at the same venue.

The results (round nine): Ivanchuk drew with Kramnik, Anand lost to Aronian, Ponomariov bt Morozevich, Svidler drew with Gelfand, Leko lost to Carlsen.
