Moscow Chess Tournament

Anand Draws Morozevich

BY Arvind Aaron

World champion Viswanathan Anand could not make use of his third white as he was held to a draw by Alexander Morozevich of Russia. Vladimir Kramnik who also drew Levon Aronian maintains his half point lead at the end of the seventh round in the Tal Memorial at Moscow on Nov 12.

The highlight of round seven was Ivanchuk's win over Gelfand which took him to joint second place with Anand on 4.5 points. Kramnik leads with 5/7. Two rounds remain to be played in this 10-player contest which is the strongest in 2009.

Morozevich accepted the queen's gambit of Anand and did not have much trouble making the draw with the black pieces. After 36 moves, Anand accepted the draw as the position was dead drawn with a rook and opposite colour bishop left with equal pawns on the board.

Kramnik has to play Leko and Ivanchuk in the last two games while Anand takes on Aronian and Gelfand. Ivanchuk faces Kramnik and Aronian. Carlsen has drawn all his games and is playing in the city of his new coach, Garry Kasparov. His advantage has not been useful as he was down with fever.

The results (round seven): V. Anand (Ind) 4.5 drew with A. Morozevich (Rus) 2.5, V. Ivanchuk (Ukr) 4.5 bt B.
Gelfand (Isr) 3.5, L. Aronian (Arm) 3.5 drew with V. Kramnik (Rus) 5, R. Ponomariov (Ukr) 3 drew with P. Leko
(Hun) 2.5, P. Svidler (Rus) 2.5 drew with M. Carlsen (Nor) 3.5.
